Only Post Content You Would’t Mind Others Viewing
When posting a photo or video of you and your friends, do you ask yourself if this is appropriate and wouldn’t mind others seeing it? Ask yourself that question. Do you? It is very important to understand that many employers look at this content and decide based on it. That why it is important that you promote yourself the way you want to be seen. Here are a few examples from CareerBuilder that employers look at and the percentage that don’t hire because of the content:
- Job candidate posted provocative or inappropriate photographs or information – 46 percent
- Job candidate posted information about them drinking or using drugs – 41 percent

When you post on social media are you promoting your true self? The one that people know you as when they see you in public. Well you want to keep that consistency. People have a tendency to post as someone they want to be or to fit in with those in their social community. Employers aren’t looking for you not the person you are around your friends. They want to see the true you. That’s how they will make the decision whether or not you would be a great fit for the company.
You always want to be respectful. No matter what you are doing, but especially true when it comes to social media. Most people can see what you commented, said, or posted. That is why it is important to understand what you say or post and how that may affect how people view you as a person. Employers will use your profiles to see what type of person you are and if you’re not respectful to others or with your content, you may not get the job you want.
Keep Professional Separate from Personal
It is important that you have both types of profiles. That is why there is professional platforms like LinkedIn. These platforms allow you to network and show your professional self. This doesn’t mean that employers will only look at those platforms, they look at every profile on every social media platform. That’ s why it is very important to remember to promote your best self. If you have any other ways that you think others may want to know about, please feel free to post them in the comments section.
